Over the course of this degree you will discover the unique identities of English and American literature and how the cultures of each country have affected their literary heritage. English studies will begin in the Renaissance and advance your knowledge of the period's great drama, prose and poetry. Your English studies will continue through to modern day literature with stops along the way in the Victorian, Romantic and Modern periods.

The disciplines of English and History are almost inseparable. Events throughout history have influenced the shape of language and literature around it from the all-consuming cataclysm of total war to the hushed intrigues of the English court. The BA in English and History brings together these two naturally complementary subjects by grouping modules in such a way that they support and enrich each other.

European Studies is a degree designed for students who enjoy learning a language and want to explore their abilities while expanding their knowledge of a wide range of other disciplines including European politics. You can choose to specialise in French and Francophone Studies, Italian Studies, or Spanish and Latin American Studies, or a combination of two of these languages and subject areas. If you choose to study two languages, only one language can be taken at beginners level.
