The programme aims to cultivate in students a deeper knowledge of Chinese culture and broaden their vision with new perspectives to prepare them in meeting the challenges of the changing society. It enhances students’ Chinese language skills and cultural literacy, which are particularly essential for professions such as education, media and cultural management.

Proof of English proficiency is required for all applicants whose bachelor’s degrees were obtained from non-English medium institutions. These applicants must meet the following minimum requirements for English proficiency: a score of 537 (paper-based) or 74 (internet-based test) in TOEFL; or an overall band score of 6.0 in IELTS; or a score of 450 in the new College English Test (CET-6) of China; or a score of 60 (pass grade) in the Test for English Majors Level 8 (TEM-8) of China; or pass in both oral and written examinations in the Public English Test System Level 5 (PETS-5) of China.

To help students further develop and reflect on their own values, so that they will be able to justify their own decisions, judgments and convictions, and so become informed and responsible citizens in their community, nation and the world. To equip future secondary school Liberal Studies teachers with subject knowledge of most modules. To stimulate the students’ interest in, and a reflective understanding of, public affairs. To enhance awareness and knowledge of the value dimensions of discourses on economic, political, legal, social, cultural, and environmental affairs. Applicants are expected to have advanced competence in spoken and written English. A good knowledge of other languages (including Chinese) would be an added advantage. If English was not the medium of instruction in their first degree, applicants are required to provide evidence of good English proficiency. At least one of the following scores or standards has been achieved: an overall band score of 6.5 in IELTS; OR a TOEFL score of 550 (Paper-based), or 79 (Internet-based); OR a score of 500 in CET-6; OR TEM-4 merit; OR TEM-8 pass.

The programme provides foundation knowledge about language and prepares students for special applications of linguistic analysis to problems arising from the students’ particular interests, careers and concerns. It trains students’ ability to solve language-related problems and has prepared graduates for a range of jobs which require good language skills and for further studies in linguistics.

Applicants whose first degree is obtained from an institution where the medium of instruction is not English should: possess a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based) or 79 (internet-based) OR a minimum IELTS overall band score of 6.5 OR Grade D or above in AS Use of English (HKALE) OR Level 4 or above in English Language (HKDSE); be able to communicate in English at an advanced level. Applicants from mainland China are encouraged to submit their TEM (minimum Level 8) test scores, where applicable.

Applicants applying to the MALCS Programme:should hold a bachelor’s degree (BA) from a recognised university or comparable institution; or a qualification deemed to be equivalent;
