第一阶段
您一般会被问及关于您的背景和考IELTS考试的原因。您应对这类问题做好准备，在第一阶段表现的要求包括：
- 在轻松友善的态度下介绍自己
- 用简单，准确而流利的言语提供您自己的基本资料
- 表现给面试官知道您愿意表达自己和您有很多有趣的事要告诉他
应做和不应做的事
应做的事：
- 保持微笑和保持眼神接触
- 当和面试官握手的时候，用力一点以表诚意
- 清淅和详细地回答
- 大方的谈及自己的事情和经验以控制场面
- 测验前多练习，以肯定您能准确运用过去式等等的语法
不应做的事：
- 不要告诉面试官您很紧张，也不要眨眼太多和眼珠有太多移动
- 握手时不要让面试官以为自己在握着一条死鱼
- 不要让对话在短句中中止
- 当面试官期望您进一步说明，不要随便停下
- 有语法错误时不要害怕，应镇定地更正，在口语考试中，流利度绝对比语法准确度重要

第二阶段
当面试官要求您详细回答一些事情时，您应察觉第二部分已经开始了。通常题目会是关于您的兴趣，您的工作和您的学业。您也许会被问及一件事的过程，一件物件如何运作或一项游戏的规则等等。想在第二阶段有好的表现，您应该能做到以下几点：
- 不需面试官太多提示而流利地讲出个人见解
- 能流利解释，描述或说明一件事情的发生
- 表现出您愿意讨论这个题目，就算您对它不熟悉，您也可围绕着这个题目发挥
应做和不应做的事
应做的事：
- 开始回答时，先表示自己对题目的看法
- 您起码要想到至少两个值得讨论的要点
- 在正式开始讲解前，先说明您会提到的要点
- 对不认识的题目，您可尝试猜测。用“maybe”,“perhaps”等字会比什么不说好
不应做的事：
- 不要说您不懂这个题目或您从来未想过这些事情
- 当您听不明白问题时，不用担心，您可要求面试官重覆一次
- 不要离题，否则面试官会以为您听不明白题目
- 不要等面试官问问题，要表现出您有能力讨论题目而不需任何提示帮助

第三阶段
当面试官要求您问他/她一些问题来收集资料时，您知道第三阶段已经开始。这可以算是一种角色扮演游戏。想在这个阶段取得高分，您必须做到以下几点：
- 明白自己角色的处境并知道自己需要什么资料
- 控制局面，问的问题必须能发掘最多的资料或能解决某些问题
- 在面试官给您的一些卡片中选用一些准确和适合的问题发问
应做和不应做的事
应做的事:
- 肯定自己完全明白自己所扮演的角色和处境
- 将过程分开3部分：设定背景，询问问题和说“Thank you”和“Goodbye”
- 在角色扮演前先说明您的角色和您想知道什么
- 尽量问多些问题发掘所有资料，您至少需问10条问题
不应做的事:
- 当您对状况不肯定的时候，不要勉强假装自己明白，您可以请面试官再重覆一次
- 在未设定背景前不要开始问卡片上的问题。尽量令对话显得自然
- 不要在题目上找些字眼来组成问题，题目的作用只是一个起首的介绍，它有时并不能组成自然流畅的问题;
- 除非题目要求，不要问任何个人问题

第四阶段
在第四阶段，您会被要求更详细地讲出您的未来计划。面试官会将话题带向关于您将来的一些计划，如您想有好的表现，您必须用到以下几点：
- 详细地谈及您的未来计划(通常是关于您的工作或学业)，避免需要面试官太多提示
- 详细讨论什么事情会或不会发生，讲出您对将来会发生的不同事物的看法
- 用简单的语言讲出复杂的意思
应做和不应做的事
应做的事:
- 预先计划说话的方式，应如何将您的未来计划表达出来
- 准备所有可能的wh/how问题(即what, why, which, where, when, how等等)的答案
- 适合的句子和语法的表达
- 对深奥的问题，您可尝试推测，尽量用简单的英语表达深奥的意思，不要随便放弃作答
不应做的事：
- 不要回答得太简单。例如，被问及您的工作计划时，千万不要只回答“我毕业后便到一间公司里作”。您可说出公司名称，想象您的职位
- 不要用太多“will”，在英语词汇中有很多字都可用来表达将来的事。“will”这个词太确定，不适合用在计划上

第五阶段(总结)
在第四阶段完成后，口语测验差不多已完结。在第五阶段，面试官会感谢您的来临和总结整个面试，您也应该多谢他/她和在临走前说再见。
应做和不应做的事
应做的事：
- 继续保持轻松态度直至离开面试室
- 有力地、有信心地握手并道谢面试官
- 请记着，最后印象和第一印象同样重要
您可在临走前这样说：“Thank you very much for your time. I enjoyed talking with you. Goodbye.”
不应做的事：
- 千万不要在测验完成后对面试官说您有多高兴考试已完成，您也不应在面试官面前评论自己的表现
- 不要问考试官您的成绩，他/她是一定不会说的
- 不要表现过分热情，您只需保持微笑地离开便可
